MAPP Discussion Group - Theories and Frameworks

It was wonderful to see Angela's work that she shared with us during Sunday's discussion group, the photos the detailed narratives, the how and why she had captured the essence of a particular piece of work was extremely interesting.

On reflection of this, I can see that there are opportunities to develop artistic creations with intimacy, collaboration and dynamics of direction and expression as a performer, teacher or choreographer.  I feel that is actually a significant part of our practices, just on different platforms with different approaches and outcomes.  Nonetheless,  every piece of work, choreography, class, workshop, show we are involved with, no matter about the scale of it, it all has a significance to ourselves, the other people involved and the observers.

I am currently revising the thoughts and reasons to the framework and theories in my research as I begin the journey of analysis on the data I have gathered so far for my inquiry.   I am using a phenomenological approach to explore the themes that have begun to emerge and resonate in the essence of the data.  I believe that his approach will enable me to look at the individuality of expression, thoughts, emotions and imagination that I can draw from the narratives and experiences that were shared.  However, through this phenomenological approach, I do know that there will be no fixed answers, only interpretations of perceptions that come through the sharing of the embodied experience.  This reflection of perceptions on the past and the present will however, allow growth and evolvement for the future.

I have been looking at  The Phenomenology of Perception (1945) by Maurice Merleau-Ponty, I have also watched videos that explore this theory and helped to me to understand how this philosophical approach will be the guidance during my data collection and analysis.

I have found through this process of learning to understand frameworks and theories that I believe it has taught me that by looking at how the embodiment of a subject is the fundamental foundation, this then encourages exploration to develop a sense of its perceptions which in turn entices the ability to embrace where this learning may go in the broader field of knowledge.

I have used this blog as an opportunity to write down what I believe to be my understanding of phenomenology, however, I would appreciate any comments that may continue my thought process on this topic.

  1. Thank goodness you wrote this blog. I have now discovered not only what phenomenology is, but that it is the approach I myself am taking! Until now, I have not been able to find a satisfactory way of describing what it is I am doing, but here it is. I am delighted.

    1. Hi Rhoda
That’s great that this has helped you, I’m very thankful of your comments as sometimes you just don’t know if you have grasped and really understood the meaning of something. It has taken this revision from module two for it to really make sense to me and writing it down definitely helped! All the best with your studies.
